Maintaining Your J Visa Status


All Scholars are responsible for maintaining his/ her status and eligibility to work and for monitoring the expiration date of his/her visa.  Failure to do so can lead to serious consequences, including loss of legal status, loss of work authorization and possible deportation.

J-1 Check –in

  • All new scholars must check in with ISC to have their status activated in SEVIS
  • Provide ISC a copy of their visa and  any new Form I-94 card
  • Set an appointment with ISC by at or email at ISCmail@ucr.edu

Maintain Valid Documents

  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Form DS 2019
  • Valid print out of the I-94 Card
  • Valid visa stamp when entering the US
  • Consult your department 60 days before the expiration date for extension
  • Report lost forms to the ISC

Employment:

  • Can be with or without salary
  • Cannot engage in unrelated employment
  • Engage in appropriate activities
  • Perform research as designated on DS2019
  • Don’t engage in unrelated employment
  • Obtain approval for outside lectures and consultations in advance

Reporting requirements

  • Report address to ISC
  • Report address on USCIS Form AR-11 within 10 days of arrival to the U. S.
